Council increases Operation ABC grant; department says sting program has national recognition

Councilmember Misakowski (recorded as the mover) said an amending motion circulated to increase the grant amount and move the committee report; that motion was adopted and the item passed as amended by roll call.
During public comment the council also heard from Rick McElroy of the Organized Crime and Vice Division, who said Operation ABC had received a national award from the National Commission Against Drunk Driving and that the department is the only law-enforcement agency in its award category. McElroy told the council that Operation ABC has been in place since 1996 and that the program’s work and grant applications have been distributed to council offices for reference.
Why it matters: Operation ABC supports local enforcement against illegal alcohol sales and the selling of alcohol to minors. Councilmembers said the program’s sting operations have been "very successful" and that maintaining or increasing grant funding would help the city continue enforcement and outreach.
