Rochester Hills City Council on Monday accepted an ordinance for first reading to adopt the 2024 International Fire Code and to update local inspection language that guides inspection frequency decisions.
Fire Chief Anne Echols told council the 2024 code contains provisions that address emerging technologies — including electric vehicles, battery energy‑storage systems and photovoltaic installations — and offers updated guidance on emergency planning and temporary operations such as food trucks and temporary heating and cooling systems. Chief Echols said the ordinance also clarifies how city fire staff will determine inspection frequency, with reference to NFPA 1730 and zoning considerations when buildings have multiple uses.
Councilmember Mongeoli (motion by Mongeoli; second by Neubauer) moved the ordinance to second reading. Council voted unanimously to accept the ordinance for first reading. The item will return for a second reading and final adoption at a later meeting.
