The World Food Programme announced today that its core food supplies for Gaza are exhausted and that a network of 25 bakeries it supported across the Gaza Strip is no longer operational, threatening lifeline assistance for hundreds of thousands of people.
WFP said the shortfall stems from restrictions on entry of supplies. "The World Food Programme announced today that they have run out of food stocks in Gaza. That is due to the Israeli ban on entry of supplies of any kind regardless of how critical those supplies may be," a WFP spokesperson said.
The agency said the 25 bakeries it supported served about 800,000 people and that food parcels intended to reach roughly half of Gaza's population have been distributed. A WFP spokesperson said remaining stocks were redirected to Hot Mill Kitchen but are expected to be exhausted by the end of the month; the agency warned that its "critical lifeline assistance may be forced to end" if deliveries do not resume.
The statements included a direct declaration that "Food supplies for our core food assistance program within Gaza are fully depleted." WFP officials called for immediate resumption of food deliveries into Gaza to prevent an interruption of assistance.
The announcement did not include details about alternate supply lines, donor commitments, or a timeline for resuming deliveries. The spokesperson did not provide a specific count of remaining days of assistance beyond the agency's estimate that redirected stocks will run out by the end of the month.
