Eastport‑South Manor students honored for civic, science and arts projects

The Eastport‑South Manor Board of Education on April 23 recognized several student achievements, including the high school student council’s selection for the 2025 National Council of Excellence Award and multiple student awards at the Long Island Youth Summit.
Dan Frangizzi, assistant principal at Eastport Junior‑Senior High School, told the board the student council “recently received the 2025 National Council of Excellence Award,” noting the council was one of 11 New York schools and one of four Long Island schools selected. He praised advisor Madison Heaney and the council’s work on spirit weeks, the homecoming dance and community service projects.
Dr. Passell, the district’s director of social studies, outlined the Long Island Youth Summit recognitions and thanked teacher Eric Grassi for mentoring students. Grassi told the board the summit drew projects from more than 30 districts; of roughly 300 projects chosen across Long Island, 32 students from Eastport‑South Manor advanced. Grassi identified winning projects and students present at the meeting: Josephine Schumann, Caitlin Mara, John Costanza and Justin Albanese (a docuseries on teen mental health); Dylan Weyrich (an essay on renewable energy); and noted Charlotte Rozicky and Kira Albanese for projects on juveniles and justice.
At the elementary level, Dr. Wachis said a Dayton Avenue School student won first place in a New York State marine‑science poster contest. Teacher Miss Savino introduced the winner, Annika Bassani, and the board applauded her award.
Student ambassadors and student presenters also gave brief updates: an inductee to the National Art Honor Society described the society ceremony and displayed work; students reported on career day, a Law Day assembly, a civics fair for seventh graders, upcoming state tests and school events such as a carnival and athletic results.
The board paused briefly to invite parents to leave if they preferred after the student presentations, then continued with business.
The recognitions highlight district students’ participation in regional and national civic, academic and arts programs, and the board encouraged community attendance at student events such as Law Day the following morning.
