City planning staff proposed adding a new public‑safety use to the Airport District land‑development code to allow the fire department’s planned training facility at the airport site.
Anya Colette, identified as the city’s park planning officer, said staff discovered the Airport District does not currently list a general government or public‑safety use even though other institutional uses — daycares, schools and transportation — are present. The change is intended to allow the fire department’s training facility, located “right across from where Life Flight is,” to proceed without a zoning conflict.
Committee members confirmed the proposal would not create a new zone but would add the public‑safety use to the existing Airport District. Staff said the proposed change will go through the standard planning‑board and public‑process review before final adoption.
The committee moved the informal review forward and recommended that the city take the code change to the planning board as the next step.
