Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful volunteers and city parks staff told the commission that the recent annual tree seedling giveaway distributed about 860 seedlings and that the program has distributed hundreds of seedlings annually over the event's history.
"This past weekend, we gave out about 860 tree seedlings," Diane said, crediting volunteers, the Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful advisory board and Master Gardeners for staffing the event.
Staff discussed electronic-waste options for residents. The Parks and Recreation Department has small TerraCycle prepaid shipping boxes for items such as cords, cables, cell phones, laptops and tablets, and staff said residents may drop small electronics at the Parks and Recreation office. For larger volumes or household hazardous waste, staff repeatedly directed residents to contact their at‑your‑door waste management service, which will schedule pickups and provide labeling and manifests. Upcoming community events promoted at the meeting included a Create Your Backyard Refuge class (working with the CU Dad Soil and Water Conservation District) planned for May 3 at Loma Colorado Library; the Great American Cleanup on May 10 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and a Clean Campus contest connected to the Great American Cleanup. The department also listed recurring events: the Campus Park car show (May 3), Shop Local Market (May 10) and Rio Rancho's Biggest Yard Sale (May 17).
Staff advised residents that while the city accepts certain small electronics via TerraCycle boxes and at-city drop-off points, some items — notably large-volume electronics and many hazardous materials — require coordination with the resident's waste management service and may generate a bill of lading or other documentation for pickup and disposal.
Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful staff asked interested residents, service groups and schools to register for the Great American Cleanup; staff said cleanup supplies would be provided.
The commission did not take a separate formal vote on these outreach items; they were presented as informational updates.
