Dubois County officials removed a proposed county administrator position, budgeted at $76,140, from the advertised 2026 county budget during a public hearing on Oct. 6, 2025, and closed public hearings for several local taxing units.
The move came after an unnamed meeting participant said, “I make a motion to remove it,” and the motion was seconded; county officials then recorded a voice consensus to remove the line item from the proposed 2026 budget, which the presiding official said was being advertised at $37,988,907. The presiding official noted the county’s reserve balance has been declining and urged a more careful analysis of spending and positions added in recent years.
The hearing record shows additional budget hearings were opened and closed without public comment. The board closed the public hearings for the Solid Waste District (budgeted at $429,120), Northeast Dubois School Corporation ($12,237,468), Northeast Dubois Fire District ($135,300) and the Airport Authority ($2,845,900). Each hearing was closed after a motion, a second and a unanimous voice vote of those present.
County discussion also addressed a preliminary draft job description related to the proposed county administrator position. The presiding official and other participants agreed that the document should be labeled and treated as preliminary to avoid misleading later readers; the body directed that detailed duties be removed from any posted job description while the draft remained preliminary. The transcript records that the auditor and staff had circulated a preliminary draft and that the commissioners would review final wording later.
No formal roll-call votes or tallies were recorded in the transcript for the removal motion; minutes show the decision to delete the position was made by consensus of those present. The transcript also records plans to approve meeting minutes at the next scheduled meeting.
Minutes and any final budget documents will reflect the advertised totals and the removal of the county administrator position from the county’s proposed 2026 budget.
