District outlines math curriculum selection; committee chose McGraw Hill with ALEKS component

Assistant Superintendent Stacy Cooper described the district’s curriculum-adoption process for the high-school math program, saying the district followed existing policy and regulation for curriculum selection and used a rubric-based review.

Cooper said the math department head, Katie McGowan, led the request-for-proposal process, reduced vendors to two finalists and organized a professional-development day in which teachers, parents and administrators reviewed both vendors’ presentations. “They ended up selecting McGraw Hill because they do have an ALEKS virtual component that allows teachers to reach back as early as sixth grade to actually embed some deep intervention that is skills and state standards aligned,” Cooper said.

Cooper said the district reached out to other Nevada districts for input and invited middle-school administration and middle-school math teachers to participate; she said middle-school administration reviewed the materials but no middle-school math teachers were present at the RFP presentations. The board did not take a formal vote on the curriculum during this meeting; staff described the selection process and the planned alignment of remediation and credit-bearing algebra courses.
