Trustee asks for deeper review after district reports rise in middle-school behavior incidents

A district staff member said the district reviews behavior and incident numbers each month and looks in more detail at school sites. Assistant Superintendent Stacy Cooper told trustees that administrators meet biweekly and that the district expected an initial rise after revising behavior definitions and implementing a common restorative-practices matrix. “We predicted that we were going to see the behaviors rise before we saw a mitigated response,” Cooper said, and she added that the district is already using themes from the data to plan professional development for administrators and staff in August.
District staff said principals conduct more detailed, site-level reviews — including looking at locations and severity — and that some schools review incident data weekly and contact parents as incidents occur. Trustees asked for a district-level overview that compares the middle school trends with other schools and clarifies what concrete steps will be taken in the coming year; Superintendent Parsons and staff agreed to return with additional analysis and a plan for action.
