Board approves multiple facility and policy items; Oakland ISD budget support fails 3-3

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools Board of Education members voted on several routine and bond-related items at their May meeting, approving change orders and contracts for facilities work while failing to endorse the Oakland Intermediate School District's proposed budget.
The board approved a consent agenda that included routine personnel actions and financial disbursements. The March 2025 disbursements listed on the agenda totaled $19,407,685. A renewal for Frontline employee management tied to the Danielson rubric, for $36,271.41, was included among the listed purchases under $500,000.
On facilities and bond-funded work, the board approved a change order to update the Western High School gym and locker room HVAC system because new state and federal refrigerant code requirements have changed the viable equipment options. The project team estimated the additional mechanical cost at approximately $163,012 to be paid from bond funds. Superintendent Doctor Lanz told the board the Environmental Protection Agencyrule changes made the originally planned equipment infeasible; the board approved the change order 6-0.
The board also approved a contract award for physical move services related to repurposing Geisler School and relocating furniture and equipment to other district buildings. The recommended award totaled $123,085 and includes two moving contractors (Office Moving Alliance Worldwide LLC and Palmer Moving Services) plus contingency for unforeseen tasks; the motion carried 6-0.
Other approved items included the Oakland County School Boards Association (OCSBA) bylaws and resolutions amendments (approved 5-1) and a 50% rental-fee reduction for the Commerce Chargers youth football and cheer program for the 2025-26 school year (approved 6-0). The board also proclaimed May 5throughMay 9, 2025 as Walled Lake Schools Employee Recognition Week.
A separate motion to formally support the proposed Oakland Intermediate School District budget failed on a 3-3 vote after discussion and a split among board members.
