Members of the Redondo Beach Youth Commission provided subcommittee updates and staff gave a liaison report on the teen center open house and next steps for reopening the space.
A subcommittee member said the teen center open house drew a modest turnout and yielded usable feedback; commissioners suggested programming such as tutoring with Redondo Union High School volunteers, outdoor recreation (basketball/pickleball) and evening events such as band nights. The subcommittee reported roughly 15 youths and a similar number of adults at the open-house session and said parents and RUHS teachers attended. "There was a parent who was very, very excited for it to be opening again," a commissioner said.
The staff liaison reported the city received visioning-board feedback from attendees and intends to use that input to begin purchasing furniture and equipment. Staff said the commission application period remains open through May 30 and reported two applications had been received at the time of the meeting. The liaison described plans for "summer pop-up" events — short, one-day or half-day activities to invite youth into the space over the summer — with a full reopening of the building likely at the start of the next school year.
Commissioners discussed wrapping up subcommittee work before the commission’s final meeting in June so that the incoming commission can continue or reassess initiatives. A motion to receive and file the subcommittee and staff updates was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; the transcript does not show a roll-call tally.
Staff said they would attempt to meet with the teen center subcommittees before the next meeting to finalize recommendations and provide the commission with an opportunity for final feedback on pop-up planning.
