The Ogden City School District board approved, by voice vote, a motion granting permission for Ogden City to create an ordinance that would allow law enforcement to enforce vehicular-traffic regulations on district property, members said.
Chad, a district staff member leading the item, told the board the request would "allow our school resource officers to enforce traffic violations on our district property." He said the change is intended to address safety concerns on campus parking lots and other district-controlled vehicle areas.
Chad quoted a statutory passage read to the board: "in 5304, a local political subdivision in which real property is located that belongs to or is controlled by the State Board, an LEA governing board...may, at the request of the responsible Board of Education...adopt ordinances for the control of vehicular traffic on that property. And then, a law enforcement officer whose jurisdiction includes the property in question may enforce an ordinance adopted under subsection 1." He said Ogden City Corporation attorneys will process tickets or warnings once the ordinance is adopted.
Board member Stacy Bridal moved the motion: "I move that we approve...regulation of vehicular traffic on property owned by the Ogden School District by the Ogden City Police and or Sheriff's Office." Another board member (recorded in the minutes as Nunley) seconded. The board took a voice vote. "All in favor? Aye. Any opposed? Okay," the chair said.
The transcript records the motion, the second and a voice vote but does not include a roll-call tally of yes, no or abstentions.
The board did not discuss signage or a required posting during the recorded discussion; Chad said he would check whether signage would be required.
