The Greencastle-Antrim School District board on May 1 approved acquiring athletic-field maintenance equipment at a price not to exceed $47,000, with the administration saying the purchase could reduce outside maintenance costs by about $10,000–$12,000 per year.
The equipment package discussed by the facilities committee and presented to the board includes a tractor (reported at about 900 hours), a groomer/vacuum with less than 50 hours of use, a top dresser and related implements. District staff and Dwight McDowell (the community member who helped identify the package) described available maintenance records and warranty information for the tractor and said McDowell will assist with training district personnel so staff can operate the equipment rather than rely on outside contractors.
Board members asked about the condition and typical lifespan of the equipment. The presenter said the tractor has been maintained per manufacturer specifications and that machines of this type can reach several thousand operating hours (the presenter said 2,000–4,000 hours is common). The board discussed storage capacity for larger equipment and the long-term goal of consolidating sheds and storage locations on campus.
Trustees voted unanimously to approve the purchase. The board and administration said they expect to coordinate with facilities staff on a schedule for initial training and to confirm location for long-term storage.
