She said the New York Times Online subscription is funded through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) at the state level and therefore could be affected; the director reported contingency planning and said the Friends of the Library might step in to fund particular subscriptions if necessary.
The director listed other updates: the library closed for a staff development day on May 1, the Friends book sale is scheduled for May 3–4, two new staff started (a lead security services guard and a librarian) and HR continues to recruit to fill two remaining vacancies. The director said the Career Success Allowance program has full enrollment and some recent graduates.
Trustees asked whether the request to explore expanded Sunday hours originated from councilors or the public. The director said the council likely noted the library’s high usage while reviewing departmental schedules; she said the library’s administration will submit detailed staffing and cost estimates for council review.
On IMLS, the director described statewide coordination through the California Library Association and consortiums such as Pacific Library Partnership and said libraries and library groups are monitoring the situation and pursuing legal and advocacy avenues at state and national levels. She said the library will update trustees as the state library provides more information.
No formal budget votes were taken at the meeting; trustees requested follow-up reports and more detailed staffing and cost estimates for any proposed hour changes.
