Cochise supervisors set May 8 work session on Mexican gray wolf after ranchers report livestock losses

The Cochise County Board of Supervisors scheduled a public work session for May 8 to review Mexican gray wolf management and its impacts on local ranching communities, county officials said during the work session preview. The presentation will be led by a representative of the Eastern Arizona Counties Association and will cover agency responsibilities, impacts to ranchers and potential county actions.
Supervisor Sophia Gomez said ranchers in eastern precincts have reported multiple livestock losses they attribute to Mexican gray wolves and expressed frustration with the verification and compensation process. "There's only one guy that comes from all the way from Phoenix to identify whether or not the cattle has been taken down by Mexican gray wolf. But if he doesn't get there in time, then decay ... they don't get compensated for their loss," Gomez said, describing delays that can prevent timely verification.
County staff said the work session will present information about the agencies involved and coordination efforts to pursue rule changes or alternative management approaches. The board said the session will provide background and let supervisors decide whether to pursue further action.
The meeting is set for 10 a.m. on May 8; the board encouraged interested residents and stakeholders to attend.
