State grants to fund pre-sentence investigator time and juvenile family counseling, county staff say

Cochise County court and juvenile department staff told the Board of Supervisors that two recurring state grants will fund court services and family counseling programs.
Court administration staff described a Fill-the-Gap grant from the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts that will pay for 0.6 of a pre-sentence investigator officer. "These pre sentence officers, they conduct the interviews with defendants and victims and witnesses. Then they write a pre sentence report and this report is given to the judge before the sentencing," the presenter said, explaining the role the position plays in sentencing.
Separately, juvenile department staff said the county received $11,960 from the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts for family counseling that is allocated to counties based on juvenile population; the grant requires a $2,990 county match that staff said has already been provided in the budget. The juvenile department said the money supports prevention of delinquency, a strengthening-families program that includes whole-family meetings, and contracted counseling services. The county noted there are limited local counseling resources and some services must be provided outside Cochise County.
Both grants are recurring allocations, staff said, and the juvenile counseling funds will be used only with providers who hold an Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts contract.
