Councilmembers on April 30 voted to address repeated fires and safety hazards at an inactive construction site in Chinatown that has been abandoned since 2022 and was the site of multiple fires, including a December 13, 2024 blaze that the council report said displaced more than 600 residents and hospitalized an older man.
Councilmember Soto Martínez introduced the motion describing the sequence of fires at that site and the broader problem of inactive, unsecured construction parcels. The motion sought steps to hold property owners and responsible parties accountable and to direct planning and public‑safety departments to close gaps that allow dangerous conditions to persist.
The council approved the motion with 15 votes in favor, with thanks given to Councilmember Arias and Councilmember Bloomenfield for working with the sponsor and committee staff. The council asked relevant departments to return with options to prevent further incidents and to consider enforcement actions and site remediation.
Councilmembers framed the item as a public‑safety and neighborhood quality issue, noting that fencing and signage previously placed at the site had not prevented repeated illegal access and subsequent fires.
The motion will be forwarded to the relevant departments for implementation and further reporting to the council.
