Motion to appoint student board member to liaison committee withdrawn, item deferred to June 23

A motion to appoint the Newark Unified School District student board member to the city–school liaison committee was moved during the May meeting, but the motion was withdrawn and the item was deferred to the committee’s June 23 meeting.

The proposal would have added the student board member as a participant on the liaison committee, with the board discussing whether the student’s participation should be on a preferential (nonbinding) voting basis to reflect the member’s non‑elected status. Supporters said student perspective is valuable for city–district collaboration and could substitute for a formal youth commission until the city or district creates one.

Opponents and some board members said the timing was poor: the current student board member’s term ends May 6 and the incoming student begins July 1, and board members said they had not had an opportunity to consult the incoming student or Associated Student Body (ASB) leadership. Superintendent Vaccar and other members asked for the district’s ASB to be consulted so the student would not be surprised by the appointment. After discussion, the member who made the motion withdrew it and asked that staff bring a proposal back June 23 after district leaders have had time to consult students.

No formal vote on the appointment occurred. The committee’s next meeting is set for June 23, when the item may be returned with clarified language on whether the student’s vote would be counted only as a preferential vote, and with outreach to the ASB and the incoming student board member.

Members and staff who spoke on the record during the discussion included Mayor Hannan; Member Jones; Member Hill; and Superintendent Vaccar. A motion was recorded as made and later withdrawn; the minutes show the item was formally removed from the agenda for this meeting.
