Planning board backs code change to let taller accessory buildings in industrial districts

The Selma Planning Board voted to recommend that the Town Council consider an amendment to Article 4, Section 17-4-36 of the town code to allow greater height for accessory buildings in industrial districts.
Planning staff told the board the current code set a 25-foot height limit for accessory buildings across zones, which staff said was too low for some industrial needs such as equipment storage. The proposed amendment would add an exception for industrial districts, stating that in industrial districts the maximum height of an accessory building shall not exceed the height of the principal structure.
Staff cited similar provisions in nearby towns (for example, Benson and Clayton) and said the change would give industrial businesses needed flexibility. Board members asked questions, and after discussion the board moved and voted to recommend the Town Council approve the ordinance amendment.
If the council adopts the amendment, industrial property owners would be able to build accessory structures with heights up to the principal structure, subject to any other zoning and permitting requirements.
