Imperial County supervisors on April 22 approved a budget amendment to add $1,600,000 to the Medi‑Cal administrative allocation to cover higher operating costs tied to recent policy changes and an aggressive statewide unwinding of pandemic-era Medi‑Cal protections.
Paula (department presenter) told the board the county completed the redetermination process earlier this year — one of 12 counties to finish on time — but staff are now dealing with increased case volumes and complexity, more time study hours and upgraded equipment needs. Paula said the request covers operating costs such as lease, supplies, updated monitors and other equipment and is funded through the Medi‑Cal administrative allocation, not the county general fund.
Supervisor Peggy Price praised staff for meeting the redetermination deadline and asked staff to keep the board informed of any statewide policy changes that could affect local coverage. Staff said caseloads average about 600 per worker now, down from highs near 800–900, and said the additional funds reflect increased time-study draws and operating expenses.
Supervisor Escobar moved approval and Supervisor Price seconded; the motion carried.
