Newton High’s Raiola Robotics team showcases season, robot designs and invites public to May 2 open house

Students from Raiola Robotics, Team 935 of Newton High School, presented the team’s season highlights and invited the public to an open house on Friday, May 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Raiola Robotics building behind Newton Heights.
A student presenter described the team’s structure and accomplishments: “We are the regular robotics team from team 935 from Newton High School. This is a photo of us winning second place at 1 of our regionals... We have won the creativity in engineering and design award 4 times in a row.” The team said it finished second in the state last year and was runner-up to go to the world championship.
The presentation included details about this season’s game (FIRST Robotics Competition 2025 game “Reefscape”), robot specifications and team organization. Team 935’s robot, nicknamed “Big Octopus,” was described as weighing 14.8 pounds and standing 41 inches tall when unextended; a sister team, 757, fielded a robot called “Bot Lobster,” which the presenters said weighed 14.6 pounds. The students described five subgroups—design (CAD), manufacturing, controls, electronics and media—and said they manufacture most parts in the school machine shop and use 3-D printing rather than kits.
Coaches named in the presentation included Alan Vermillion, whom the students said has coached for eight years, and Colin Pottery, who the students said is an 11-year coach and an alum. The group also described moving from paper scouting to an electronic scouting program using tablets that operate without internet access.
The students closed by inviting commissioners and residents to the open house and thanked the commission for the time. The commissioners and audience applauded the presentation.
