Commission approves proclamations: Arbor Day, National Police Week and National Small Business Week

The Newton City Commission approved three proclamations during the meeting: a proclamation declaring April 26, 2025, as Arbor Day; a proclamation designating the week of May 11–17, 2025, as National Police Week and Thursday, May 15, as Peace Officers Memorial Day; and a proclamation naming May 2025 as National Small Business Week in Newton.

Mayor Rich Stinnett read the Arbor Day proclamation and noted the city's long-standing participation in national tree programs: “I, Rich Stinnett, mayor of the city of Newton, do hereby proclaim 04/26/2025 as Arbor Day in the city of Newton and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.” The proclamation text presented to the commission referenced Newton's recognition as a Tree City USA community for 49 years and participation in Tree Cities of the World.

Chief Dunleavy spoke briefly when the National Police Week proclamation was introduced, thanking the commission for recognizing officers and inviting the public to the May 15 memorial at 11:30 a.m. in front of the law enforcement training center. “I really appreciate you guys taking the time to recognize our officers,” he said. The proclamation text cited the federal designation of Peace Officers Memorial Day and honored members of the Newton Police Department.

A city representative identified as Pam addressed the commission before the Small Business Week proclamation and urged support for local merchants, saying small businesses are “the backbone of our community.”

All three proclamations were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting record.
