Votes at a glance: Board approves courses, transportation purchases, summer driver education, enrollment posting and administrative contracts

At the meeting the Shawnee Heights Board of Education voted on a series of action items. All motions recorded in the transcript passed unanimously (6–0) unless noted below.

Wind ensemble course: The board approved a course proposal to create a top-tier wind ensemble for band by audition, intended to mirror a top-tier chamber orchestra. Staff said no additional staffing would be required. Motion by Rosa; second by Christie; vote 6–0.

Bus purchases: The board approved purchase of three 71-passenger buses and one 14-passenger non-CDL bus from Midwest Bus Sales through a Kansas purchasing program. Staff said the 71-passenger buses replace 65-passenger buses put in service in 2011; the 14-passenger vehicle is a non-CDL unit that any appropriately licensed driver may operate. Board members asked why gasoline buses were chosen over diesel, whether the district considered air conditioning and the district’s maintenance capacity. Staff said gas buses were selected because diesel small-bus production and emissions regulations have changed, air conditioning would add an estimated $15,000–$20,000 per bus and add maintenance tooling and staffing costs, and the chosen buses include tinted windows and a white roof to aid cooling. 2025 summer driver education: The board approved the summer driver education proposal, including the addition of an instructor to replace retiring teachers and to build future capacity. Staff said the program is self-funded by student fees and district budget support. Motion by Christina; second by Christie; vote 6–0.

Business by consent: The board approved business-by-consent items (motion by Christie; second by Erica; vote 6–0).

Nonresident enrollment capacity posting: As required by statute, the district postable open-seat counts by building and grade were reviewed and approved for publication. Staff explained the method used for projections (current cohort, an allowance for two additional students per section for in-district growth, and class-capacity limits by building) and noted title schools have slightly smaller capacity limits. Motion by Christie; second by Christina; vote 6–0.

Administrative contracts (executive session): The board convened an executive session to discuss a nonelected employee’s performance under the Kansas Open Meetings Act and approved administrative contracts on return to open session. Motion to enter executive session cited the nonelected personnel exception; motion to approve administrative contracts: motion by Rosa; second by Christie; vote 6–0.
