The Brooksville City Council read a proclamation declaring April as Volunteer Appreciation Month and recognized volunteers from multiple city boards and community programs at a special meeting on April 21, 2025, at City Hall.
Council read the proclamation at the start of the meeting, thanking volunteers for ‘‘helping others’’ and for contributions to children, adults and the elderly, and announcing a volunteer recognition event at 6:30 p.m. April 21, 2025, at City Hall.
The proclamation noted that volunteers ‘‘learn new skills, expand their professional networks, connect with neighbors, and experience the satisfaction that comes from serving a larger cause,’’ and stated that ‘‘nearly 50 volunteers’’ provide valuable services to the city. Council members then called volunteers forward by committee to receive certificates and take group photographs.
Mayor (unnamed) opened the formal business by asking, "Do I have a motion to approve the agenda?" A councilmember moved the motion and another councilmember seconded it; the motion passed 5-0. The meeting otherwise consisted of the proclamation reading and the presentation of certificates to volunteers who serve on boards and in adopt programs.
Volunteers and board members recognized included members of the Cemetery Advisory Board (including Joseph Mayer, identified in the meeting as the cemetery advisory board chair), the Planning and Zoning Commission (Joseph Redpath identified as chair), the Beautification Board (Richard Ross identified as chair), the Brooksville Housing Authority (Barry Mendel identified as chair), the Police Pension and Firefighter Pension trustee groups, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (Amanda Cunningham Rudd identified as chair), the Great Brooksvilleian Screening Committee, the Good Neighbor Trail Advisory Committee, and members of the newly formed South Brooksville CRA steering committee. Adopt-a-spot and adopt-a-trail volunteers and local groups such as the Brooksville Garden Club and several individual volunteers were also recognized.
During the invocation, the vice mayor (unnamed) led a spoken prayer that included a remembrance of the late Pastor Dave Franklin. No policy measures, ordinances, contracts, or budget actions were taken at the meeting; the event was a recognition ceremony. The special meeting concluded with an invitation for attendees to remain for the regularly scheduled council meeting or leave after refreshments.
Council did not take additional formal action beyond approving the meeting agenda and issuing the proclamation; no vote on the proclamation was recorded in the transcript.
