Washington County supervisors approved fee waivers for multiple upcoming events at county facilities, including the Washington County Convention Center and related venues.
The board granted fee waivers or requested fee waivers for events the county is hosting or supporting, including: the Alcorn State University Small Farmers Conference (Sept. 22–24, date as stated by the presenter), a Greater Washington County Alumni Chapter event (denim, pearl and white, April—applicant to coordinate alcohol permit and insurance), and events requested by the Greenville Public School District. The waivers were approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: Supervisors said the events draw visitors and can bring economic activity to Greenville and Washington County. One presenter said Alcorn’s Small Farmers Conference typically attracts 275–300 attendees from neighboring states, and the university sought county support either financially or in-kind.
Details
- Alcorn State University: Geraldine Jones, director of county operations with the Alcorn State University Extension Program, told supervisors the university plans to bring its 34th annual Small Farmers Conference to Greenville Sept. 22–24 and asked the county to waive fees for the convention center and expo facilities. Jones said the conference usually attracts 275–300 people from neighboring states and requested either financial or in-kind support. The board voted to waive fees.
- Greater Washington County Alumni Chapter: A request to serve alcohol at a fundraising event and to have facility fees waived was presented and approved; board members required organizers to complete required paperwork and coordinate with the sheriff’s department and insurance requirements.
- Greenville Public School District: The board approved a request to waive fees for district events at county facilities.
Votes and process
Each fee-waiver motion was moved, seconded and approved by the board; votes were recorded as carried. Board members cautioned applicants to secure necessary permits, coordinate with law enforcement for security and provide insurance certificates.
Ending
County staff were directed to follow up with applicants on availability, permits, and paperwork. The board emphasized that alcohol approvals require sheriff’s office coordination and insurance verification.
