Family members and preservation advocates asked the Los Angeles City Council on Oct. 2, 2001, to formally acknowledge architect Edward H. Fickett’s contributions to the historic and seismic renovation of Los Angeles City Hall. The council referred the matter to the Public Works Committee for review.
Joyce Fickett and other speakers described Edward H. Fickett’s work on the City Hall Phase 1 seismic retrofit, asserting he produced evaluations, seismic models and construction documents that stabilized the tower and advanced the project. Project staff from the Bureau of Engineering and the city’s design team confirmed Fickett’s early analyses supported decisions to vacate the tower and pursue extensive rehabilitation; staff said later design work and other consultants were also involved in the final plans.
Members of the council suggested sending the request to the Public Works Committee and asked Project Restore and engineering staff to advise the committee on Fickett’s role and appropriate recognition. The council agreed to refer the matter for committee consideration.
Speakers and councilmembers said any formal recognition should consider project records and consultant roles; the council did not adopt a specific honor but moved the item to committee for fact-finding and recommendation.
