The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Oct. 2, 2001, to pay the difference between employees’ city compensation and military pay for city personnel called to active duty.
Councilmembers discussed an earlier proposal that would have required employees to sign over their government checks to the city; controller and city attorney offices advised that arrangement was impractical because of direct deposit and other complexities. Councilmember Zine and others said the controller’s office already had experience administering similar payments in past calls to active duty and recommended proceeding with the motion to cover the pay differential.
The council adopted the motion, with the roll call recorded as 13 ayes.
City staff said the controller’s office was prepared to administer the payment; councilmembers asked that any implementation questions be handled in coordination with the city attorney and controller.
