Montebello Parks and Recreation outlines spring and summer programming; commission approves minutes

Montebello Parks and Recreation staff presented a program and events update that included an Earth Day community cleanup on April 26, a monthly low-cost pet vaccine clinic on April 19, youth soccer season and skills testing, summer aquatics opening June 6, a LA84 Foundation grant to subsidize swim lessons, a summer food-service grant application, concerts in the park and holiday events.
"We are going to be hosting a community cleanup on Saturday, April 26..." said Veronica Ramirez, assistant director, who outlined volunteer opportunities at Chet Holifield Park and Reggie Rodriguez Park from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., a compost giveaway at Reggie Rodriguez (courtesy of Athens) while supplies last, and an e-waste and bulky-item collection at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ramirez said the monthly low-cost pet vaccine clinic will be April 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at City Park and offers vaccines and a $12 rabies shot. She said youth soccer practices begin April 28 with games starting May 16 and reported that each age division currently has four teams and the department is accepting a wait list. Ramirez said the aquatics program is scheduled to open Friday, June 6, with lifeguard and instructor recruitment underway; about 10 candidates have been selected so far and staff hope to add four to six more.
Ramirez also said the department received a LA84 Foundation grant this year to offer discounted swim lessons at $25 (rather than $50) up to a total amount of $10,000. She said the department is applying for the federal/state summer food-service program to provide free lunches at four park sites from June 9 through Aug. 8, Monday through Friday in the afternoons, and two sites would offer an additional snack option; staff estimated combined daily lunches across sites at about 75 to 200 per day. Ramirez closed by listing concerts in City Park, a Scribe for Pride event on June 7 and an Independence Day event on June 28.
During commissioner reports, Vice Chairperson Lovano and others welcomed new Commissioner Ashley. The commission moved to approve the minutes for the March 20, 2025 meeting; a motion and second were made and the motion passed (movers not recorded in the transcript).
