Montebello seeks to add dog-park rules to municipal code; chapter 12.27 completed first reading at council

City staff reported to the Montebello Parks and Recreation Commission that the city council introduced and unanimously passed the first reading of a proposed ordinance to add chapter 12.27 to the Montebello Municipal Code, a new section that would govern conduct at a forthcoming city dog park.
"Chapter 12.27 was introduced to city council on April 9, with no questions and it was passed unanimously," said David Vestager, director of parks and recreation. Vestager said the council will hold a second reading in May; following council approval the municipal code will be updated to include the new chapter.
Staff said the recreation department worked with Montebello Police Department and code enforcement to craft the ordinance and reviewed practices from several other municipalities. The draft chapter includes rules that dogs must be accompanied by persons 18 and older; dogs must be vaccinated and licensed; no more than three dogs per adult; dogs must be spayed or neutered; aggressive dogs are prohibited; and animals other than dogs are not allowed in the dog-park facility. Staff said the dog park construction is underway and expected to finish within a few months.
No commission action was recorded on the ordinance during this meeting.
