District attorney secures CARP grant, will hire law graduate as assistant until bar admission

District Attorney Britney Antonacci updated the committee on caseload and grant activity and sought committee approval to alter hiring for a grant-funded position.
Antonacci said the office had 27 indictments in April, above its normal average of about 15–17. The office received an $80,000 CARP (Crimes Against Revenue Program) grant for a welfare-fraud task force. The DA said the sheriff’s office has agreed to join a task force with the district attorney’s office and the Department of Social Services to concentrate on welfare fraud and similar revenue-related offenses.
The committee approved an amendment to a March resolution so the grant-funded assistant district attorney role may be filled by a recent law school graduate who will start as a law associate until she passes the New York State Bar. Antonacci said the candidate is taking the July bar exam and that formal admission could be delayed until January; a practice order from the Fourth Department would allow courtroom participation under supervision in the interim.
Antonacci said the office had one resolution on the floor (the amendment) and no other business.
