Board committee approves CTE local application, priorities include articulated credit and work-based learning

Nash County Public Schools staff presented and the committee approved the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) local application on May 15. The application runs on a two-year cycle; the approved document sets priorities and funding uses for the second year of the current cycle.

Why it matters: the local application identifies how state and federal CTE funds will be used and clarifies district priorities for career pathways, credentialing and postsecondary alignment.

Key priorities described by the presenter included aligning high-school CTE courses to college credit (articulated credit), implementing career development plans for grades 6-12 per state requirements, expanding industry-recognized credential opportunities, strengthening student organizations (FFA, SkillsUSA, FCCLA), growing business and labor market partnerships, and expanding work-based learning experiences. The presenter also reviewed the continuum of CTE exposure—career conversations in elementary, exploration in middle school, engagement in high school and postsecondary alignment.

Funding and assurances: staff said the local application documents state and federal grants and assurances that will support materials, teacher capacity-building and programmatic activities. No additional district funding requests were listed at the committee meeting.

Board action: A motion to approve the local application carried at the committee (motion by Doctor Washington, second by Mister Lamb; vote recorded as "all in favor").
