Program overview presented by Miss Hargrove Jones:
- Elementary SSA (required by state Read to Achieve legislation) will run June 23 through July 17, with a break for the July 4 week; sessions meet Monday through Thursday to deliver the statutorily required 72 hours of reading instruction. Students attend 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; teachers' workday is 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The migrant program will run during the same dates.
- High school credit-recovery begins June 18 on each high school campus. High schools will provide 100 concurrent credit-recovery seats per traditional high school (principals are asked to prioritize seniors then juniors, sophomores and freshmen as seats permit).
- Elementary SSA sites named in the presentation: Nashville (hosting Cooper's Elementary and the summer migrant program), Bailey (hosting Middlesex and Spring Hope), Winstead Avenue (hosting Inglewood and Biminiu), Red Oak (hosting Hubbard) and Edwards (stand-alone site). Transportation and meals will be provided at summer feeding sites.
Eligibility and bonuses: District staff said second graders scoring in the strategic or intensive risk bands and third graders who have not met the 725 Lexile threshold will be invited. The $1,200 signing bonus is paid upfront for qualified teachers who accept employment; for each third-grade student who reaches the 725 Lexile level during the program, the teacher receives $150 at program end. Presenters emphasized bonuses are intended to recruit and retain teachers for the compressed schedule.
Board action: The superintendent recommended approval and the committee motion to approve the $1,200 signing bonus and $150 performance bonus carried (motion by Mister Gray; second by Doctor Washington; vote recorded as "all in favor").
Ending: Staff said they will continue recruiting to maintain a roughly 1:18 class ratio for elementary summer classes and that the district cannot compel families to attend; participation is by invitation.
