Elizabethton Board recognizes SkillsUSA winners, All‑State musicians and Winter Guard national ranking

During the recognition portion of the April meeting, the Elizabethton Board of Education honored multiple student groups for regional and national achievements.
Jenica Norman and school staff recognized the SkillsUSA middle‑school competitors who traveled to the TCAT in Smyrna. Winners announced included Greta Garner, Judah Norman and Harper Shelton (first place, team engineering challenge); Cora Bailey (second place, extemporaneous speaking); Safa Newell, Maya Elhelieu and Patricia Lingerfeld (second place, promotional board); Favor Musaw (third place, extemporaneous speaking); and Heather Meyer, Zach Ward and Valerie Holzer (third place, chapter display).
Elizabethton High School music staff highlighted All‑State band and choral students. Ben Davenport, co‑director at Elizabethton High School, said Rourke Gearing qualified for All‑State vocal and band ensembles and achieved one of the top audition scores in the state. Baylor Hopland and two juniors also qualified for All‑State band, Davenport said.
Winter Guard coach Phil described the program’s rapid rise: after launching two years ago, the group finished third at a Knoxville regional and then finished third at the Southeast Power regional in Atlanta with a reported score of 89 out of 100. Phil said the national rankings later placed Elizabethton High School third in the country in its class, drawing attention to the school system.
The board also recognized students who attended the Student Congress on Policies and Education (SCOPE) at Belmont University in Nashville; Lauren Watson attended the meeting to be recognized, and Cooper Chenault, Helen Hackett and Sarah McCoy were listed as attendees.
Board members and administrators congratulated students and staff and noted community and school support, including practice space provided by Westside staff and assistance from staff members named during remarks.
