Keizer engagement committee elects chair and vice chair, approves minutes and adopts city observance schedule

The Keizer Community Diversity Engagement Committee elected Jane Tinto as chair and Sarah Cross as vice chair, approved the minutes from April and voted to present a revised schedule of proclamation observances to the Keizer City Council. Committee members also voted to table draft action plans on items 9 through 13 for future meetings.

The committee, an advisory body to the City Council, conducted officer elections and several procedural votes during its meeting. Sarah Cross, identified in the meeting as a Keizer City Councilor and city council liaison (nonvoting), was chosen as vice chair. Jane Tinto, a newly seated committee member, was chosen as chair.

Committee members approved the April meeting minutes after a motion, then debated assignments of community proclamations for coming months and voted to forward the updated list of proclamation observances to the City Council for placement on council agendas. The packet lists month-by-month assignments (for example: Juneteenth, National Suicide Prevention Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and others) and several committee members volunteered to coordinate speakers for specific months.

After discussion, the committee voted to table agenda items 9 through 13 — draft action plans the City Council expected the committee to develop — until a future meeting when members will have had more time to review and prepare. City staff advised that those draft action-plan templates are included in the current meeting packet for members to edit ahead of the next session.

Kevin White, identified as assistant city manager and finance director, reminded members that because the committee serves in an advisory capacity to City Council, the public meeting laws that apply to council work also apply to the committee and urged members to review meeting-law guidance and the resolution that created the committee.

The committee closed the business items and scheduled follow-up work, including committee review of the action-plan templates and outreach coordination for the proclamation speakers.
