KDOT mill-and-overlay set to begin on K-43 May 5; UP track repairs close Buckeye Avenue for several days

County Administrator Janelle Docket told the commission that Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a mill-and-overlay project on K-43 starting May 5. The county noted the work is substantial and that it is "very desperately needed." Officials said the project is roughly a $3,000,000 contract and will begin in the Barker area before moving to Interstate 70 sections.
Separately, Union Pacific railroad crews are repairing tracks at Buckeye Avenue. The county reported the crossing is closed beginning the morning of the meeting through Saturday, May 3. The closure is within city limits but affects courthouse approaches. The county suggested alternate routes such as Third Street or Brady for courthouse access.
Camp Road remains closed between K-18 and 3400 Avenue while crews replace several small structures; four of seven replacements are complete. Road work crews are grading roads and spraying for noxious weeds when weather permits.
Why this matters: The mill-and-overlay on K-43 and the railroad repair temporarily affect travel and access across the county and to the courthouse; the Camp Road closure is a local infrastructure repair that will briefly limit traffic.
