Student members of Woburn High School’s math and science teams presented highlights from their competitive season, described practices and outreach, and credited coaches and captains for student growth.
Anik Patel, co-captain of the math team, told the committee the team ‘‘broke another record with 91 points’’ this season and that every competing member scored at least one correct round answer. Students and coaches described weekly after-school practices, quizzes modeled on contest problems, and team events that included building challenges and design tasks.
Science team captains displayed photos and described events ranging from structural engineering tasks to a rocket activity. Captains and coaches emphasized the teams’ role in mentoring younger students and building community: members worked with freshmen through seniors and participated in school events to recruit new participants.
Committee members praised the students and coaches for their dedication and for cultivating STEM interest across grades. Several seniors described college plans in STEM fields; captains thanked coaches by name and noted former coach Mr. Princik’s ongoing influence.
The committee dismissed the student group with gratitude and encouraged continued participation during budget season and beyond.
