A county staff member presented a veteran’s abatement application that had an effective date of Aug. 15 (after the Nov. 1 deadline for owner-occupied classification). The assessor’s office cited SDCL provisions allowing petition to the board for recalculation and recommended a partial abatement for the months the exemption would have applied. The board approved a partial exemption and ordered the county equalization office to apply the exemption going forward for taxes payable 2026.
