New Prague recognizes student success: state championships in adaptive floor hockey, wrestling and Youth in Government delegation

The New Prague Area Schools board meeting opened with several student and program spotlights, including a state championship in adaptive floor hockey, wrestling honors and a report from the district’s Youth in Government delegation.

Adaptive floor hockey: Jeremy Cole, head coach of the adaptive sports floor hockey program, said the co‑op team (students from Belle Plaine, Jordan, Tri‑City United and New Prague) completed a three‑year run with a 29–4 record and finished the 2025 season undefeated at 11–0, culminating in a state championship game victory, 11–8. Cole credited long‑term community and district support and noted the program has been hosted by the district for roughly 20 years.

Wrestling: Board members recognized Lawson Eller (senior), a two‑time state champion and four‑time state finalist, and Zee Kala (eighth grader) who won a girls’ state championship with a 36‑0 record. Speakers said New Prague’s wrestling program is a K–12 pipeline; student presenters emphasized community support and volunteer coaching.

Youth in Government (YIG) and Model UN: Jen Seiler, YIG advisor, and student leaders summarized recent conferences. Jordan (student chair) and other delegates described legislative and court simulations, national‑level connections, media‑team activities and a voter registration initiative the delegation organized on Constitution Day to register 16–18‑year‑olds. The board applauded student leadership and advisers; one student, Jacob, received the statewide Servant Leader award.

The board took no formal votes during the spotlights but paused for photos and congratulatory remarks.
