The Whiteville Police Department announced awards recognizing detectives and officers for lifesaving actions and named an employee of the first quarter of 2025.
Chief of Police announced that the department’s awards committee selected a detective in the detective division identified in the transcript as “Detective JT” as the employee of the quarter for the first quarter of 2025 and approved lifesaving awards for three officers, including Sergeant Arnold and Officer Long. The chief described the department’s nomination process, saying sergeants and others may submit nominations that the awards committee—made up of members across ranks—reviews before approving honors.
The chief told the council that one of the cited incidents occurred in September and left the victim with brain injury affecting aggression, mood and memory, and that doctors had told the officer the victim was fortunate to have reached medical care quickly. The chief also said that on March 30, 2025, Officer Long responded to a nonresponsive, not-breathing child; Long and other responders performed back blows and aided prompt transport to the hospital. In the transcript Officer Long said, "I'm blessed," when discussing the outcome.
Mayor praised the department’s presentations, saying they were among the most special presentations he had seen while an elected official. The awards committee citation was to be read aloud to the council and the officers were acknowledged at the meeting.
The department’s description of the awards process and the incidents was limited to the statements at the meeting; no ordinance, personnel action, or change to department policy was announced during the remarks.
