Coatesville robotics advisors and students showcase robots, ask for extra adviser

Advisors and students from the Coatesville High School Robotics Club gave a demonstration and presentation to the Coatesville Area School District Board on April 22, describing team work, technical skills and community outreach and asking the board to consider a staffing addition.

Advisors said the club had 26 students this past year divided into three teams, and that students built robots from scratch rather than using kits. The advisors reported that students logged at least 420 hours each (about 13.5 hours per week) on robotics work during the season and that the program teaches engineering principles, 3-D design, 3-D printing, soldering, programming (including Java), troubleshooting and public presentation skills.

The club said it competes in three qualifier events plus an on-campus event (held in February) that draws roughly 30 teams and several hundred visitors; the group also does outreach demonstrations at elementary schools, summer camp and community events, and hosted visits from engineers and industry partners including Siemens and Lockheed Martin.

Club officers and student drivers performed an onstage demonstration. Advisors told the board they could expand enrollment substantially but requested a third adviser to support more students and teams.

Why it matters: the presentation highlighted a high-school extracurricular program that builds STEM skills, professional engagement and outreach. Advisors asked for a personnel addition to expand student access; the request will need to be considered within future staffing and budget discussions.

No formal board action was taken on the staffing request at the meeting; the group was publicly commended by the board.
