Santa Clara County supervisors approve fire service zone, homelessness and immigrant relief funding and other measures

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on April 22 approved a series of implementation and funding actions and heard reports on public safety, homeless health services and long-term planning.

The board adopted a resolution to order creation of Service Zone 4 so that county fire can continue an existing South County fire mitigation fee and operate the former South Santa Clara County Fire Protection District territory under the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District. The board also voted to accept staff reports or amendments tied to the Valley Homeless Health Program, to allocate/clarify urgent immigrant-relief funding and to approve a modification for a veterans suicide-prevention grant. Supervisors also directed administration to consolidate and prioritize the board's outstanding referrals and to return with an agreed schedule for a countywide strategic-planning process.

Why it matters: The votes move operational changes and funding from planning into near-term implementation: the Service Zone 4 action preserves an existing mitigation fee and allows county fire to staff and operate in South County; the homeless-health and veterans grant steps enable expanded services; and the urgent community-needs funding expands outreach and legal/health support for immigrant communities in the wake of federal policy changes.
