Board approves proposal to replace middle school auditorium sound, projection system; estimate ~ $100,000

The Schuylkill Valley School District board on April 29 considered a proposal from vendor Visual Sound to replace the middle school auditorium sound system, projector and screen and to upgrade audio networking and wireless microphone equipment.

District staff and the vendor described the existing auditorium equipment as original to the building and not meeting current performance needs for assemblies and performances. The proposed work would replace aging mixers, wireless microphone systems and cabling, install a widescreen projector and screen (replacing the existing 4:3 format screen), and migrate to more modern audio networking technologies such as Dante to simplify future maintenance and integration.

In discussion, board members acknowledged the proposal’s sticker price — described in the meeting as “about a hundred thousand dollars, roughly” — and asked for clarification about what the estimate included. Facilities and technology staff said the figure reflected a full rip-and-replace of audio/visual equipment and installation costs and noted the vendor recently completed successful installations in other district spaces.

Board members asked whether the middle school auditorium could be unavailable for events that precede completion; staff suggested, as an interim step, using the high school auditorium for events such as the eighth-grade awards ceremony if necessary. The board moved the item forward for approval and directed staff to proceed with vendor negotiation details and scheduling to minimize event disruption.

The vendor and staff characterized the upgrade as a modernization that would reduce analog cabling, improve reliability and lower future installation costs when equipment changes are required.
