The Big Lake Public School District School Board voted to uncommit $29,120 that had been donated years earlier and restricted for construction of a Liberty shelter. District staff said the original donor, a youth association, formally terminated last year and that the original fundraising plan to complete a shelter did not come to fruition.
Staff recommended that the board uncommit the funds and move the balance into the district’s assigned fund balance for athletics and activities so the money remains dedicated to extracurriculars and student activities. District staff said they will work with school leadership, including the athletic/activity director, and return to the board with a recommendation for a specific use of the funds.
Board member Sigsberry made the motion to uncommit and Hancock seconded; the motion carried. Board members emphasized the donors’ original intent to support athletics and activities and indicated the district would preserve that purpose by moving the funds to the assigned fund balance for activities. No specific project was identified at the meeting; staff will return with proposed allocations when available.
