Residents press council for transparency, training after police response at protest and fatal officer‑involved shooting

Multiple residents used the public‑comment period to press the Pocatello City Council and police department for greater transparency about law enforcement actions and for training on interactions with people with disabilities.

Scott Valter raised questions about a recent tactical deployment at a peaceful protest on April 12, saying there has been no public explanation for the presence of a sharpshooter team and that his review of public arrest records did not show arrests that would appear to justify that level of response. “The public deserves transparency, not silence,” Valter said, and asked the city or police department to release documentation of the alleged threat or to request a public statement from the FBI if federal information prompted the deployment.

Emma Tribe, who said she has experience with autistic children, urged the council to ensure accountability and training following the fatal shooting of Victor Perez. “I urge you to make sure that those involved in this terrible tragedy are held accountable and the Pocatello Police Department is trained on the behavior of autistic people and de‑escalation techniques,” Tribe said.

Steven Adams described personal and professional experience with disabled populations and expressed concern about the speed and tactics used by officers in a recent fatal encounter; he asked why additional body‑cam footage had not been released. A family member and community supporters have publicly requested more information about the incident.

The council did not take action during the meeting on these matters; staff and council members reminded commenters that the council cannot take official action on items raised during public comment but may refer issues to staff or schedule them for a future agenda. No formal referral or timeline for additional reporting by police staff was announced during the meeting.
