Representatives of Hardee County Disposal appeared at the May 1 workshop to ask the board to consider a contract extension to give the company confidence to invest in equipment and operations.
Public Utilities and Solid Waste Director Evelyn Guffey read the company’s request for discussion; she said the current contract contains annual inflation escalators (typically 3 percent) and that the vendor was seeking advance consideration of a longer-term extension to support capital expenditures such as automated trucks and cart conversions.
Commissioners asked whether the county had recently sought competitive bids; staff said a prior board decision had deferred competitive solicitation after a market review several years ago because incumbent pricing and service were judged favorable. Commissioners asked staff to assemble comparative rate data from nearby counties, to examine commercial and landfill fee structures, and to return with draft terms and analyses. County staff said HCDI (Hardee County Disposal, Inc.) asked for a 10-year extension in its letter but that staff would prepare information and a proposed extension only after direction from the board.
No formal extension or vote was recorded at the workshop; staff indicated they would prepare a comparative report, draft contract language and a recommended timeline for commission consideration.
