Commissioner Carpenter urges refresh of 2018 strategic plan as county growth accelerates

Other commissioners seconded the call to review the plan. One commissioner noted the county has experienced faster-than-expected residential growth and referenced the consulting firm’s 2018 observation that commercial development is needed to offset residential costs; court members said growth is continuing and that the county should plan for major projects, including possible jail needs and capital improvements.
Court members discussed the process: whether to repeat the comprehensive 2018 consultant-led public engagement (which previously cost about $50,000) or to update the plan incrementally in-house and add new elements such as a capital improvement program. Several commissioners favored an in-house refresh using staff and existing committees, supplemented by targeted public outreach and scheduled benchmarks tied to the new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.
