Parks, Recreation and Golf advisory committee recommends becoming a commission

Delilah Collins, co-chair of the Parks, Recreation and Golf Advisory Committee, told the Commerce City Council that the committee recommends changing its status from an advisory committee to a commission and adopting the name "Park, Recreation and Golf Commission." The committee also recommended not creating a separate golf advisory committee for now.
The committee outlined its purpose as advising the city on planning, construction, maintenance and operation of city-owned parks, golf, recreation amenities, open space and program services. Collins said the PRG Advisory Committee has 13 members and held nine meetings this year covering the PRG master plan, the city budget, Kalu Park naming, active-adult and inclusion programming, the Bison Ridge active-adult room remodel, CIP updates, and other items.
Committee members supplied short statements on why they volunteer. Collins read statements from Council Member Dukes, Council Member Granadetti, Sean McDowell and others describing interests in trail connections, open-space restoration, tree preservation and youth engagement. Collins said the committee also volunteers at community events, including Music in the Park.
Collins told council that at an April 15 meeting the committee "decided that we recommend becoming a commission. We recommended naming it the Park Recreation and Golf Commission. And we recommended not to create a separate golf advisory committee at this time," adding that the committee could revisit a separate golf advisory committee later if needed.
Council members thanked Collins and the committee for the work; Mayor Douglas said the change is "long overdue" and praised committee members' volunteer time. Council and staff discussed next steps: finalizing an ordinance and bringing it to council for first and second readings. City staff said the council had made a motion earlier to pursue commissions and that the ordinance process will run through the regular calendar (first reading already completed for a related item, with a second reading scheduled).
Collins also summarized the committee's role in supporting park events, the Monaco Park reopening, Run With Buffalo and other community activities. She described the PRG master plan as a 25-year framework and said the committee views the plan as a "North Star" for future projects.
Council members asked about timing and the ordinance process; staff said they will draft and deliver an ordinance to council for formal consideration in the upcoming meeting schedule.
The council did not vote on converting the advisory committee at this meeting; Collins presented the committee's recommendation for council consideration and staff reported they will prepare the ordinance to follow the standard legislative process.
