Resident asks council for traffic signal at Morton Road and Katy Hockley amid growing congestion

Betty Williams of 6001 Spoonbill Street asked the Katy City Council on April 28 to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Morton Road and Katy Hockley, saying police direction is inconsistent and traffic is backing up to Spoonbill Street.

"My question tonight... is how much longer will we be waiting for a light at Morton and Katy Hockley? The police directing traffic is a real hit and miss," Williams said, adding that school buses returning to bus barns and motorists cutting through Katy are contributing to the congestion. Williams told the council it has been "2 and half years since we were told we would have a light at that intersection."

Williams said surrounding roads are two-lane county roads and that Harris and Waller counties are not in a hurry to widen them; she noted development north of Katy Hockley outside the city limits is increasing traffic. She asked the council to consider traffic control at the Morton and Katy Hockley corner.

Why it matters: residents report ongoing traffic backups that affect school bus routes and neighborhood streets; the request highlights a multi-jurisdictional issue because adjacent roads and new construction outside city limits are in county jurisdictions, which may affect the city's ability to act unilaterally.
