A Millis High School senior presented a senior‑project plan to reduce traffic congestion and illegal parking on a utility road adjacent to the high school.
Daniel Sparks, a Millis resident and senior, told the Select Board the narrow side road between the high school entrance and Monroe Street frequently becomes blocked by illegal parking on both sides, causing standstills. "Illegal parking is one of the biggest problems with that utility road," Sparks said, adding that drivers often avoid legal parking and aim for quick exits, which creates hazards.
His proposal calls for widening parts of the road to allow two‑way traffic, stenciling legal parking on the side nearest the tennis/pickleball courts, designating a no‑parking tow zone on the opposite side (to preserve emergency access), installing clearer signage and creating a small number of formal spaces (he and staff estimated possibly four spaces). The DPW reported it has already widened a portion with millings to the student's specifications and that the police chief has been consulted about enforcement.
Board members praised Sparks' work and noted the project is part of his senior project rather than a formal town capital program. The board implied the town will support incremental work where feasible; no formal town expenditure or permitting decision was made at the meeting.
Sparks said he hopes the improvements will deter illegal parking and reduce the risk of accidents or delayed emergency access at the school.
