Parents urge El Campo ISD to expand dual-credit courses, adopt online classroom tools and allow year-round soccer period

Three members of the public used the meeting’s public-comment period to ask the El Campo Independent School District Board of Trustees to take specific actions for students.
Grandfather and parent speaker Mr. Murphy urged the board to adopt online teaching platforms such as Google Classroom so parents could reinforce lessons at home. “The fundamental version of Google Classroom is free,” Murphy said. He also asked the board to expand dual-credit offerings so high school students can earn associate degrees before graduation; he said a Wharton County Junior College counselor told him El Campo has not completed board approvals for all dual-credit courses.
Local soccer organizer Larry Smith and parent Zach Eder urged the board to create a year-round soccer period at the high school so players can practice throughout the year rather than only near the season. Smith said year-round practice would help athletes stay in shape and maintain grades. Eder said soccer is the fastest-growing youth sport in El Campo and that parents, coaches and fundraisers are prepared to support the program.
Board members did not take action during public comment; a board member thanked speakers and noted public comment is not an agenda item and therefore the board does not comment during that segment.
